Is It Better to Brush Teeth at Night or in the Morning?

Here at River Run Dental, we understand that our patients lead busy lives. If you work, go to school, have a family to care for, are involved in many hobbies, and/or participate in social activities often, your oral health may be at the bottom of your priority list. You may know that you are supposed to brush your teeth twice a day yet wonder if you can get away with doing it once a day at night or in the morning.

The truth is that you must brush your teeth twice a day, regardless of how busy you are. If you only brush at night, you may put yourself at high risk for developing gum disease. The foods you ate during your meals may stick around on and between your teeth. By brushing at night and in the morning, you can significantly reduce your chances of developing gum disease.

If you save your brushing for the morning and refrain from doing it at night, you may develop cavities. While you can get a cavity filled, know that cavity fillings don’t always last forever. They may need to be refilled and each time they are, more of the tooth will need to be drilled away. At some point, you may even require a crown, which can become very costly.

In addition, brushing once a day can lead to bad breath. This can be a particularly serious problem if you are around people at work or school all day. While you can try to cover up bad breath with mints and gum, not brushing your teeth twice a day can cause foul-smelling plaque to build up. In most cases, no amount of mints or gum can cover this up.
