Short Pump, VA Dentist Explains What a Cavity Feels Like

Cavities are considered one of the most common health problems in the world. If you’ve never had a cavity before, kudos to you. Keep up the good work as cavities are no fun. Here at River Run Dental, we’ve had a few patients ask us what it feels like to have a cavity. If you’ve never had one before, you may be wondering the same thing. Here’s what our Short Pump, VA dentist has to say:

If you have a cavity in your mouth, you’ll likely experience tooth pain. Be sure to visit our office if you feel any pain when you bite down on something you eat as you may have a toothache, which may be a sign of a cavity. If you don’t take care of your tooth pain right away, it may eventually progress and worsen your cavity if you have one.

You may also face tooth sensitivity as a result of bacteria that is thinning down your enamel, which is responsible for protecting the nerves in the teeth. When bacteria starts to eat through the layer of enamel, your nerves may make your teeth sensitive and you may feel a tickle or tingle at certain times. If a sensitive toothpaste doesn’t resolve your sensitive teeth, contact our office because you likely have a cavity.

Cavities are usually invisible to the naked eye. However, if you are able to see holes in your tooth, you likely have a cavity that has progressed. You may require fillings or even a root canal to get your cavity under control.

While cavities can lead to pain and discomfort, they can be easily prevented. As long as you brush and floss daily and visit us for a dental exam and cleaning every six months, you’ll be in good shape.
