What are Dental Crowns?

Dental Crown

Crowns are a type of dental restoration that fully cover the portion of a tooth that lies above the gum line.

Crowns encase the entire visible aspect of the tooth and essentially become the new surface of the tooth.

A crown may be necessary if decay has consumed enough of the tooth that there is no longer a stable tooth structure remaining.

Who Needs a Crown?

A crown may be recommended if your tooth is at risk or is currently decayed/damaged. Our dentist will examine the tooth and base their recommendation on factors like:

  • Large cavities or fillings in which there isn’t a lot of the natural tooth left
  • Breaks or cracks that leave the tooth brittle and at risk of further damage
  • Enhancement, such as if the tooth is misaligned, discolored, or very uneven
  • Capping off an implant, since it is the last part of the restoration
  • Replacing worn teeth due to teeth grinding and trauma

Crowns are a very versatile and quality option to restore a tooth’s function and appearance.

What to Expect During the Crown Procedure

Dental crowns are a simple procedure that is typically completed in one to two visits.

Consultation & Exam

We begin with a complete evaluation of your tooth, which may include x-rays and scans. Your dentist will determine if a crown is the best option. They may recommend other procedures before having the crown done (such as a root canal).

Preparation, Impressions, and Temporary Crowns

Your dentist prepares the tooth by shaping the outer layer. Anesthesia is used during this, so you won’t feel a thing, and to help you relax. Once complete, an impression is made to ensure the crown will fit exactly to spec and comfort. A temporary crown is then applied to the tooth’s base.

Permanent Crown Placement

The permanent crown will be created. Your doctor will then remove the temporary crown and place the permanent crown. They will check for fit, color matching, and bite feel. Finally, the crown is cemented into place. Your dentist will make finer adjustments to ensure your bite feels right and so the crown doesn’t interfere with your chewing.

That’s it. You now have a brand new dental crown.

Your aftercare is your normal oral hygiene routine. Brush, floss, and use a mouth rinse to ensure your crown (and the rest of your mouth) stays healthy.
