Dental Emergency Tips
Try to Stop Bleeding
If you’re bleeding, make every effort to stop it. Take a clean, cold wash cloth and apply it firmly to the site of the injury. Be sure to lean forward instead of back to stop your blood from flowing down into your throat. Also, stay in a seated position until the bleeding is under control as laying down or standing can cause you to faint.
Stay Calm
Although it’s easier said than done, don’t panic if you experience a dental emergency. Ask a loved one to support you until you see an emergency dentist. If your child or someone else is facing an emergency, stay calm yourself and encourage them to take deep breaths.
Don’t Worry About Finding Knocked Out Baby Teeth
If your child has a knocked out baby tooth, you may want to search your house and yard for it. Doing so is pointless as we won’t reattach baby teeth that have been knocked out. Depending on your child’s age, we may leave it be or make room for the adult tooth to erupt with a space maintainer. Instead of looking for the tooth, ask your child to rinse with water and use a cold compress to alleviate swelling.
Avoid Touching the Roots of Teeth
If you experience a knocked out adult tooth and find it, don’t grab it by the roots.This can damage the cells and reduce the likelihood of a successful replantation. Try to grab the tooth by the crown, which is the visible area above the gumline. It’s also a good idea to rinse the tooth with water or milk to remove any debris. If you can’t reinsert the tooth yourself, place it in a cup of milk and bring it to an emergency dentist.
Know When to Go to the Emergency Room
The good news is most dental emergencies don’t warrant a trip to the emergency room. Sometimes, however, they are necessary. If you are facing uncontrollable bleeding or serious trauma to your jaw or face, visit the emergency room. You can get faster treatment and go to an emergency dentist afterwards.
Take Toothaches Seriously
Some people ignore toothaches when they first pop up. Then, once they start to experience some serious pain, they take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen to relieve the discomfort. When this happens, the pain becomes unbearable and a dental emergency arises.
Avoid Aspirin
If you want to alleviate some pain, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen are usually safe. Aspirin, however, is not. It’s a blood thinner that may cause any bleeding to persist. Even if you’re not bleeding, Aspirin may prevent your blood from clotting quickly after a procedure.
Take Advantage of Cold Compresses
Since cold compresses are safe and effective for dental emergencies, keep a few in your freezer. If you don’t have any, a frozen bag of peas will work just as well. Cold compresses can reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling. It’s a good idea to apply them for 15 minutes and take 15 minutes breaks. Continue this process until you start to feel better.
