Pros and Cons of Fluoride at the Dentist

Fluoride is a mineral in your bones and teeth that’s also found in water, soil, plants, and rocks. If you go to the dentist for a routine exam or cleaning, you’ll likely be offered fluoride treatment. Fluoride helps prevent cavities by strengthening your enamel, which is the outer layer of your teeth. If you’re unsure of whether or not to receive fluoride at the dentist, our list of pros and cons is sure to help.

Pros

  • Reduced cavity risk: If you are at a high risk of cavities, fluoride is a good option. It can reduce the risk of plaque breaking down the enamel layer and bacteria infecting and harming the nerves and blood.
  • The potential to reverse small cavities: Early cavities can be stopped by fluoride treatments from the dentist as well as excellent at home hygiene.
  • A simple, painless treatment: You won’t have to worry about any pain or discomfort when receiving fluoride because it’s one of the most simple and painless dental treatments performed.

Cons

  • Additional cost: Insurance doesn’t always cover fluoride treatment, meaning you may need to pay anywhere between $10 to $30 out-of-pocket. Check with your dentist before committing to treatment so you’re not surprised.
  • No eating or drinking for 30 minutes: In order for the fluoride to be effective, you’ll need to refrain from eating or drinking for 30 minutes. Doing so can allow the fluoride to completely absorb and work its magic.
  • Side effects: Just like any medication, fluoride comes with some side effects. These include white specks on the teeth, staining and pitting, and very dense bones that lack strength.
