Will Whitening Work on All of My Teeth?

Many individuals desire pearly white teeth and “whitening” can make this possible! “Whitening” refers to any process that will make teeth appear whiter in color. Typically, whitening products contain one of two bleaches, either a hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These bleaches are designed to break up stains on the teeth, which makes the teeth look brighter as a result.

However, it is important to know that although whitening treatment is often very successful, it will not work on all of your teeth if you have crowns, veneers or fillings present in the mouth . Unfortunately, tooth-whitening products do not alter the color of any crowns, veneers or fillings; they can only alter the color of natural teeth.

If you have crowns, veneers or visible fillings it would be best to first consult with a dentist concerning any whitening treatment. Whitening treatment may very well still be possible if the crowns, veneers or fillings are addressed first. This could be as simple as changing the shades of the existing crowns, veneers or fillings to the desired bleach shade of the natural teeth. On the other hand, if you have crowns or fillings that are located on molars or teeth in the back of the mouth, these teeth most likely would not be noticeable if the shades were not altered.
