When Should My Child See The Orthodontist?

Braces have traditionally been associated with the teenage years, so it’s no surprise that many parents don’t realize that their children can benefit from seeing the orthodontist at an early age. The AAO recommends that children first see the orthodontist at age 7. Sound early? Read on to find out why 7 is the magic age for orthodontics!

By age 7, most children have already lost some of their baby teeth and may even have a few of their permanent teeth. By the time this happens, it allows an orthodontist the opportunity to see how those adult teeth are coming in and they are typically able to identify any potential problems that may be tough to fix down the road. An example of problems your orthodontist may be looking for are the presence of a crossbite, overbite or underbite. These problems are much harder to fix as children get older and may end up requiring the extraction of teeth or surgery.

Our friends at James River Orthodontics offer complimentary orthodontic consultations so you have nothing to lose by bringing your child in for an evaluation. Dr. Scarborough is a Richmond orthodontist and treats children, teens and adults. JRO is located right next door to Rusnak Family Dentistry so you will feel right at home when you go to see them for the first time.
