Teeth Whitening with Crowns – Is This Suggested?

Teeth whitening is more popular today than ever before. After all, everyone wants pearly whites and a movie star smile. If you have crowns, you may be wondering whether it’s a good idea to get whiten your teeth.

We do not recommend teeth whitening with crowns for a number of reasons. First and foremost, they simply do not respond to whiteners. Believe it or not, teeth whitening treatments can actually damage your crown. This is particularly true if your crown is old, leaky, or the teeth surrounding it have started to decay. You may begin to experience sensitivity, burning, or irritation.

The reality is that fake teeth will not change colors once they have been placed in your mouth. Their material is shaded to match the color of your other teeth so that once they are in your mouth, they look completely natural.

If you’d like to whiten your smile, you may need to replace your crowns to match your whitened tooth enamel. We would be happy to whiten your smile as much as you’d like and change out your crowns after the process. You can expect your new crowns to be matched to your new shade of teeth and enjoy the brighter, whiter smile you’ve been longing for.

Keep in mind that your natural teeth will begin to stain again over time. For this reason, it’s important to opt for whitening treatment at least a few times each year. It’s best to do so after you get them professionally cleaned. If you don’t do this, your crowns may appear whiter than your natural teeth.
